MEETING PLACES: MANGKAJA X CREATIVE GROWTH

Part 1: Oakland, California 2019

After completing an internship in 2016 at Creative Growth in Oakland, Tom di Maria and Emilia Galatis developed a relationship that resulted in two USA exhibition. Co–curatoring two shows entitled Meeting Places, they worked together to present and dissect the role of community arts in broader narratives. Inspired by the pure energy, community power and visual impact of each group of artists, and their often-marginalized role in the contemporary art world, the exhibition examines intersections of the work itself and the frequently striking stylistic similarities between makers from these two art communities.
